Gynecological Surgery: Preparation and Recovery Checklist

Prepare for laparoscopy, hysteroscopy or other gynecological surgery with questions about medicines, fasting, consent, recovery and warning signs.

Read the guide

Instructions vary by procedure and hospital. Follow the operating team’s written directions if they differ from this general checklist.

Your preparation checklist

  • Procedure name, reason, expected benefit and alternatives
  • All medicines, especially blood thinners, diabetes medicines and supplements
  • Allergies and previous anaesthetic problems
  • Required tests, imaging and pre-anaesthetic assessment
  • Exact fasting and arrival instructions
  • Transport home and responsible adult support if required
  • Written wound, activity and follow-up instructions

Questions to discuss

  • What exactly will be done and could the plan change during surgery?
  • What are the main risks for me and how are they reduced?
  • How much pain, bleeding and restricted activity should I expect?
  • When will results be available and who should I contact?

When to seek urgent medical care

After surgery, seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, fainting, very heavy bleeding, worsening severe pain, persistent vomiting, high fever, increasing wound redness or one-sided leg swelling.

Frequently asked questions

Should blood thinners be stopped before surgery?

Never stop them on your own. The surgical and prescribing teams must give an individual plan.

Is every laparoscopy or hysteroscopy a day procedure?

No. Discharge timing depends on the exact operation, anaesthesia, recovery and individual health.
