Pregnancy Warning Signs: When to Seek Urgent Care

Know the pregnancy symptoms that need urgent assessment, including bleeding, severe pain, reduced fetal movement, fluid leakage and severe headache.

Read the guide

Most pregnancy symptoms are not emergencies, but some changes should not wait for a routine appointment or online reply. Save your maternity unit and emergency contact details in your phone.

Your preparation checklist

  • Heavy vaginal bleeding or passing clots
  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain
  • Fainting, seizures, chest pain or difficulty breathing
  • Severe headache, visual disturbance or sudden swelling
  • Fluid leaking from the vagina
  • Fever with feeling very unwell
  • Reduced or changed fetal movement after movements have been established
  • Regular painful contractions or labour symptoms before term

Questions to discuss

  • How far pregnant am I and what symptoms began first?
  • Is my blood group known, particularly if I am Rh negative?
  • Have I had hypertension, diabetes, placenta problems or previous complications?
  • Which hospital or maternity unit should I attend?

When to seek urgent medical care

If you have any listed warning sign, contact your maternity unit or nearest emergency service now. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, severely unwell or unsafe.

Frequently asked questions

Can an online consultation manage heavy bleeding in pregnancy?

No. Heavy bleeding or severe pain in pregnancy needs urgent in-person assessment.

What if I am unsure about fetal movement?

Contact your maternity unit promptly for individual advice; do not wait until the next day if movement is reduced or clearly different.
